EMD’s first turbocharged Geep, the GP20 was among the first of the “secondgeneration” of diesels. Many roads, like the Burlington and Cotton Belt, helpedoffset the costs of these new units by trading in FT’s and other earlier EMD locomotivesto contribute parts to the new machines. The GP20 saw wide success across manyrailroads in mainline service. Over the years many were subsequently rebuilt, somelosing their turbos in the process, and diverted to secondary trains and locals.
